Los Guapos (1-1) bounced back from their season-opening defeat last week with a convincing win over Fierce Melon (1-1). Los Guapos opened up the scoring with 2 unanswered goals in the first half. The first came just 8 minutes in when midfielder Grey Kironde chipped a ball over the defense onto the path of forward Robb Gavalis. The goalie came out to try to cut off the play, but Gavalis beat him to the ball and headed it past him into the open net. They widened their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Arnold Sengooba. Defenseman Tony Garcia won the ball in the midfield and passed it to Navid Yazdani at the edge of the penalty area. Yazdani relayed the ball into the box to Sengooba who blasted it at the net. The ball deflected off the goalie and bounced into the net just under the crossbar. Fierce Melon made it 2-1 five minutes before half time on a nice deflection off a centering pass from the left side.
Los Guapos kept up with their strong play in the second half and added another 2 unanswered goals. Ten minutes into the half, sweeper Mike Gontarek's goal kick found Gavalis on the right side of the center circle. He spotted Caitrin Abshere running up the left side and delivered a nice pass into space for her to run onto it and carry it upfield. Before the defense could catch up to her, Abshere carried the ball into the penalty area and placed a beautiful shot past the goaltender at the near post from 15 yards out for the 3-1 lead. Gavalis also assisted on the fourth goal eleven minutes later when he centered it from the right side to a wide open Mark Provenzano at the far post. Provenzano had plenty of time to trap the pass and tuck it into the net. With eight minutes left to play, Fierce Melon scored to make it 4-2, but they would get no closer. Guapos goaltender Adam Harter had a very strong game, making some key saves on the few times that the defense was beaten.
Los Guapos will try to get a winning streak going before the Labor Day break when they face off against Das Booters on August 30 at Clarke Middle School in Lexington, 12 pm start.
