1st 2nd Final
Los Guapos FC 1 1 2
The Bloody Shins 0 0 0

September 20, 2009, 1:40 pm at BB&N School, Cambridge
After a bye and two postponed games, Los Guapos (2-1) played their first league game in almost a month but showed little, if any, signs of rust. The team put together a very strong performance and handed first-place Bloody Shins (3-1) their first loss of the season. Los Guapos controlled the play for most of the early going and kept the ball in their opponents' half. They opened the scoring 11 minutes in on a corner kick by Mark Provenzano. Provenzano saw an opening and went directly for goal and it was 1-0 Guapos. This was the second time this season that Provenzano scored directly off a corner kick.
As the minutes went by, the Bloody Shins started to take control of the play and put pressure on the Guapos looking for the equalizer. However, the defense held firm and the first half ended 1-0. The Shins kept the pressure on in the start of the second half, but were repeatedly thwarted by the Guapos' team defense as well as goalkeeper Mike Gontarek, who made a spectacular diving save on a shot to the left post to preserve the clean sheet. Los Guapos then began to enjoy some good stretches of possession and had a few opportunities of their own, including a shot by midfielder Caitrin Abshere which rang off the crossbar. They were finally able to put some distance between them and their opponents when Grey Kironde threaded a pass to Robb Gavalis, who was making a run towards the net on the left side. A Bloody Shins defenseman tried to cut off the pass but missed, leaving Gavalis alone against the goalie. With the goalie rushing out to cut off the angle, Gavalis shot the ball past him into the open net to make it 2-0 with 14 minutes left to go. A couple of the Shins' players protested vehemently to the referee that there was an illegal slide on the play but only got shown yellow cards for their troubles.
Los Guapos were able to close out the game to earn their second straight win and first shutout of the season. Their next scheduled match will be against Confusion (2-1) on September 27, 4:40 pm at Olin College in Needham.
